The First Automobiles
The first automobiles made were not from a busy factory in the heart of Detroit. The first cars to be manufactured were not American, and not even gasoline powered, but started as steam powered cars more than a decade before the first Model A was created.
The two leaders in the first production of steam powered cars were France and Germany. While the German based company of Mercedes Benz is said to have been founded in 1881 working with steam powered ideas. It wasn’t until 1885 that both Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz, working independently, started the idea of a gasoline engine, and Karl Benz did not market an automobile until 1901.
In 1884 a French company showcased the De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux a four wheel steam powered car, named La Marquise, which was built for the Count De Dion who was one of the Co-founders of the company. The La Marquise fired up its steam boiler with a coal fire. It reach a top speed of about 38 mph that allowed it to win the very first automobile race, covering 19 miles, in 1888. It won this race in competition with the three wheeled version of the De Dion Bouton.
The first cars such as this led to, in less that a decade, the founding of , 
, Buick in 1899 and the Ford Motor Company after 1903.
